Ban appeals
When a server turns appeals on, people it banned can ask to be unbanned on the Ninth Bot dashboard. This page is for banned members, the staff who decide, and the admins who set it up.
Turning appeals on
Appeals are off by default. An admin turns them on in one of two places:
/setup, section Moderation & logs: Enable ban appeals, and optionally pick an appeal channel.- The dashboard: Settings, Appeals: tick Allow ban appeals and pick an Appeal channel.
New appeals are posted in the appeal channel with Accept (unban) and Deny buttons. They also go to the mod log, if it is a different channel. Without an appeal channel, appeals only show in the mod log and on the dashboard.
Appealing a ban
- Go to https://dash.ninthbot.site/appeal, or use the Appeal this ban button in your ban DM.
- Press Sign in with Discord. Ninth Bot only reads your Discord identity.
- Find the server on the Ban appeals page. It shows the ban reason and, when the ban was made with the bot, the case number, the ban date and when a temporary ban expires.
- Write your appeal under Your appeal and send it.
The page only lists servers that have banned you and have appeals turned on. If you see "Nothing to appeal", either you aren't banned anywhere that uses Ninth Bot appeals, or the server has appeals off.
Limits
- Your appeal must be 20 to 2000 characters.
- You can have one appeal waiting at a time per server: "Your appeal is waiting for review."
- After a denial, you can appeal again 14 days later. The page shows the date.
- You can only appeal while you are still banned.
After you send it, the page shows your latest appeal, its status, when it was decided and any note from staff.
Deciding an appeal
Deciding needs Ban Members (or Administrator). Staff can decide in two places:
- In Discord: press Accept (unban) or Deny under the appeal post.
- On the dashboard: the Appeals page. Staff without Ban Members don't see the buttons there.
Both ask for an optional note of up to 500 characters, which is sent to the member with the decision.
- Accept lifts the ban the same way
/unbandoes: the ban case is closed and an unban case is recorded with the reason "Appeal accepted", plus your note. If the bot can't unban (for example, it's missing Ban Members), the appeal goes back to pending. - Deny keeps the ban and starts the 14-day wait.
Nobody can decide their own appeal. If two people decide at once, the first decision counts and the second is told the appeal was already decided. The appeal post updates to show the decision, and its buttons are turned off.
Appeal posts are colour-coded: orange while pending, green when accepted, red when denied.
The outcome DM
The member gets a DM either way:
- Accepted: "Your ban has been lifted. You can rejoin the server with an invite link." The bot doesn't send an invite, so share one yourself if you want them back.
- Denied: "You can appeal again after 14 days."
Any note from staff is included. If the member has DMs closed, they can still see the outcome on the appeal page.
