Logs

Ninth Bot keeps a record of what happens in your server in a few staff channels, and on the dashboard. This page explains each log and what it keeps.

The log channels

LogSet inGets
Ticket log/setup, ChannelsTickets opened, claimed, unclaimed and closed
Transcripts/setup, ChannelsThe transcript file of each closed ticket
Mod log/setup, Moderation & logsCases, reason edits, report reviews, appeals, setup changes, the weekly summary and warnings
Message log/setup, Moderation & logsEdited, deleted and bulk deleted messages

Any of these can also be set on the dashboard. A log with no channel set simply isn't posted. The bot needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in each one, and Attach Files where it posts files.

Mod log

The mod log is your shared record of staff actions. Each case is posted with an Edit reason button. Reason edits get their own entry showing the previous and new reason.

It also gets report cards when there is no reports category, report reviews, ban appeals and their decisions, evidence files added on the dashboard, failed auto-unbans and the weekly summary.

Setup changes

Every settings change, from /setup or the dashboard, posts a Setup changed entry with who made it and what changed. Changes from the dashboard are marked "(via dashboard)", and undos say which change they undo. The full list, with undo, is on the dashboard's History page.

Message log

Set a message log channel to log message edits and deletes from members. Keep it staff-only, because it shows deleted text.

What is logged

  • Message edited: the author, the channel, the text before and after, and a link to the message.
  • Message deleted: the author, the channel, when it was sent, who deleted it, the text and any attachment names.
  • Bulk deletes: see below.

Each edit and delete entry has a Moderate author button. It opens the Moderate panel for the message's author, showing only the actions you have permission for.

What isn't logged

  • Messages from bots and webhooks.
  • Messages in the message log channel itself.
  • Channels and categories on your Message log ignores list. Ignoring a category covers every channel and thread inside it, which is handy for your tickets category. You can pick up to 25.

Messages sent before the bot last restarted show as not cached, without their text.

Who deleted it

Give the bot's role View Audit Log and delete entries get a Deleted by field: the moderator who deleted it, or "The author (no audit log entry)" when the author deleted it themselves. Without View Audit Log the field is left out. The bot's invite link doesn't include this permission, so add it yourself.

Bulk deletes

When many messages are deleted at once, for example by /purge, you get one entry with the number of messages, the channel, the number of authors and who did it.

  • Under 50 messages: the messages are listed in the entry.
  • 50 or more: the entry has a Show full list button that sends you the list as a text file. Only people with Manage Messages can use it. The list is kept for 14 days.
  • 50 or more, with message text storage off: the list is attached to the entry as a text file instead.

Stored text and the 14-day limit

The dashboard keeps a copy of every log the bot posts, so staff can search them. Message edit and delete entries contain what people wrote, so they are deleted after 14 days. Other entries are kept.

Admins can turn this off with Stop storing message text in /setup or Store message text on the dashboard's Moderation & logs page. When it is off:

  • Every stored message edit and delete entry is deleted right away.
  • New entries keep only who, where and when, not the text.
  • The message log channel in Discord still works as before.

Turning storage back on doesn't bring back deleted entries. Mention the 14-day retention in your server's privacy notes. See the privacy policy.

The dashboard logs page

Staff can browse every stored log on the dashboard's Logs page, 50 at a time, newest first. Filter by:

  • Log types, such as Ticket created, Mod case, Setup changed, Message deleted or Appeal.
  • User id and Channel: entries that mention that user or channel.
  • From and To dates.
  • Search: the title, description and field text.

See Cases and tickets for the other staff pages.
