Welcome messages
Ninth Bot can greet new members in a channel and by DM, say goodbye when they leave, and give new members roles. This page is for admins.
The three messages
| Message | When | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Join post | A member joins | Your welcome channel |
| DM | A member joins | A direct message to the member |
| Leave post | A member leaves | Its own channel, or the join post's channel if it has none |
Each one starts from a default template and is off until you turn it on. The join post needs a channel before you can turn it on. Members with DMs closed just don't get the DM.
Editing a message
In /setup, open Welcome, pick the message type, and use:
- Turn on / Turn off.
- Edit text: the message text above the embed, the embed title, description and colour (
#RRGGBB), and the channel ID for the join or leave post. - Images: the small image (thumbnail), the big image, the author icon and the footer icon.
- Preview: shows you the message privately. A preview never pings anyone.
- Reset: deletes your template and brings back the default, turned off.
The dashboard's Welcome settings page has the same options, plus the author name, footer text, Ping the member and Show time in the footer, with a live preview. See Server settings.
Limits
| Part | Max length |
|---|---|
| Message text | 2000 characters |
| Title | 256 characters |
| Description | 4096 characters |
| Author name | 256 characters |
| Footer text | 2048 characters |
The limits count the text after placeholders are filled in, using the longest value each placeholder could have.
Placeholders
Use these anywhere in the text. They work in any capitalisation, so {membercount} works too.
| Placeholder | Becomes |
|---|---|
{user} | A mention of the member in the join post when Ping the member is on, otherwise their username |
{user.name} | Their username |
{user.display} | Their display name in the server |
{user.id} | Their user ID |
{server} | The server name |
{memberCount} | The member count, like 1,234 |
{memberCount.ordinal} | The member count as an ordinal, like 1,234th |
{channel:123456789012345678} | A link to that channel (use the channel's ID) |
{avatar} | Their profile picture link |
{banner} | Their profile banner link |
{server.icon} | The server icon link |
Placeholders the bot doesn't know are left as you typed them. Names are shown as plain text, so a username can't ping anyone or break your formatting.
Images
Each image field takes a full https:// link, or one of {avatar}, {banner} or {server.icon}. Leave a field empty to remove that image. Links must use a public website address, not an IP address.
By default the small image is {avatar} and the big image is {banner}. If a member has no banner, the big image is left out.
Pings
Only the join post can ping, and only the member who joined, when Ping the member is on. The default join post starts with {user}! so the member is pinged. The DM and leave post never ping.
Auto-roles
Pick up to 5 roles under Auto-roles on join in /setup (or Auto roles on the dashboard Roles page). New members get them after joining. If your server uses membership screening, they get them once they accept the rules.
The bot refuses a role that:
- Is
@everyone, or managed by a bot or integration. - Sits at or above the bot's highest role.
- Has a moderation or admin permission, such as Administrator, Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Messages, Kick Members, Ban Members, Moderate Members, Mention Everyone or Manage Webhooks.
The bot needs Manage Roles. If a role becomes unsafe later, the bot skips it and posts an Auto-role skipped note in the mod log.
Ignoring bots
Ignore bots is on by default. When a bot joins, it gets no join post, no DM and no auto-roles. Press Welcome bots too to change that.
